PCB Assembly vs Box Build Assembly: What Should OEMs Outsource?

Ordering a tested board is not the same as ordering a shipment-ready electronic product.

OEM buyers often use PCB assembly and box build interchangeably. That can create gaps around cables, mechanical parts, firmware, final functional testing and packaging. The simplest way to choose a model is to define the deliverable and who owns every handoff.

What PCB Assembly Includes

PCBA generally covers populated circuit boards: approved materials, SMT/THT soldering and the agreed board-level inspection and test route. It does not automatically include cables, enclosure integration or product-ready packaging. ANZ describes its PCB assembly services as a controlled route from files and materials to verified boards.

What Box Build Adds

Box build integrates one or more PCBAs with enclosures, harnesses, mechanical items, displays, labels, firmware/configuration steps where agreed, system-level verification and pack-out. ANZ’s box build assembly services explicitly describe PCBA, cabling, mechanical integration, testing and delivery coordination.

Scope Comparison: PCBA vs Box Build

Workstream PCB Assembly Box Build
PCB fabrication/components Usually in scope as agreed Coordinated with system BOM
SMT/THT assembly Core Core input
Board-level inspection/test As agreed May precede integration
Enclosure and mechanical fit Usually out of scope Within agreed integration scope
Cables and harness installation Usually out of scope May be in scope
System-level functional test Separate unless specified Define explicitly
Labels and final packaging Board pack-out Finished-product pack-out

Who Owns the BOM, Revisions and Materials?

A board BOM may be adequate for PCBA. A box-build project also needs a system BOM, drawings, harness documentation, approved fasteners, firmware or variants, labeling instructions and packaging specifications. Assign ownership for shortages, substitutions and engineering changes.

Testing Boundaries Are a Common Source of Rework

Passing AOI or a board functional test does not ensure the product will pass once cables and enclosures are installed. Decide which tests occur before integration, which occur after, who supplies fixtures and what evidence must ship with each unit.

When to Outsource Only PCB Assembly

Board-only outsourcing may fit OEMs with proven internal final integration, proprietary mechanical operations or an established final test line. It also works when prototypes must circulate among engineering teams. However, supplier handoffs and configuration control remain your responsibility.

When Integrated Box Build Makes More Sense

An integrated scope may reduce supplier handoffs when the product requires multiple subassemblies, cable routing, mechanical fit and shipment-ready verification. The quote can be more meaningful when all acceptance and material responsibilities are documented from the start.

Build an RFQ Scope That Cannot Be Misread

Attach board manufacturing package, full product drawings, BOMs, cable/harness data, firmware ownership, inspection/test plans, labeling, variants, packaging, quantities and delivery expectations. The custom PCBA quote guide covers base files; include system-level instructions when buying a complete product.

A Practical Outsourcing Decision Checklist

Choose board-level PCBA when the deliverable is a verified board and you retain downstream ownership. Choose box build when you want a defined finished-system deliverable. For either model, agree open issues, design revision, sourcing split, test coverage, packing and release authority before placing the order.

Practical Next Steps

Before confirming a build or recovery route, prepare the relevant design files, approved requirements and acceptance criteria. For project-specific feasibility, send the latest controlled package to ANZ Electric.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is box build the same as PCB assembly?

No. PCBA is board-level manufacturing. Box build adds agreed system-level integration and final delivery steps.

Does a box build quote automatically include a wire harness?

Not necessarily. Harness procurement, fabrication or installation must be explicitly included in the scope and approved drawings.

Can one provider handle PCB assembly and final integration?

Yes, where the provider has the relevant validated capabilities and both stages are contractually defined.

What should OEMs send for box build quotation?

Board files plus mechanical drawings, system BOM, cable details, variants, final test requirements, labeling and packaging specifications.
